March

March

Hugging corners and cliff-sides in
forest shadows, shiny ice sweats the fight
against winter’s decline. Jagged icicles
melt; droplets gather below, refreeze
and transform into a nest of eggs

swollen with springtime

seeds of parsley,
basil, marjoram, romaine
awaken in the greenhouse,
burst soil, taste sunshine

daffodil rapture, forsythia zest,
suffusion of warmth,
yellow returns rejoicing.

Spring peepers chant applause.
Pussy-willows bloom silver velvet.
Strutting robins boast first worm prizes.
Weeping willows trail braids of baby green.

Pudgy hands arrange crocus flowers
in mama’s nest of hair,
sprinkle double-handfuls of
violas like confetti,
clutch daffodils behind back,
offer them beaming,
catch an orange butterfly
and let it go…
