February
Season’s first crocus blooms yellow
near a path by the firepit,
then another by the love stump
where they multiply daily in pale purples
huddled like shy girls at recess:
saffron eyes peeking through cupped petal-faces
at bold snow-irises posing regally
and gangs of violas rivaling grape hyacinths.
A gust of warmth travels by
sends kites to the sky
and bubbles through air
blown by the breath
of laughing children.
